“I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy.”

Casa Hogar Maximo Cornejo 2014
Cornejo was founded in 1993 “with the intention of helping boys and girls whom, at their young age, found themselves without the care of a family, victims of violence, or living in extreme poverty. The idea was to create a space from which these children would receive attention and essential care while at the same time offering them the opportunity to grow in a safe environment, receive an education, and gain self-esteem.” At the moment, Casa Hogar Maximo Cornejo is home to children ranging in age from 6 months to 11 years.
Our goal was to give love, attention, and time to these wonderful young children. We wanted our own ASPV students to recognize the importance of giving back to the community, even if it is only time and love that you have to offer. Love is a basic need that is essential to our development and growth. To accomplish our goal, we divided our students into 4 groups. Each group was in charge of organizing a station that they, along with the children from Casa Hogar, ages 5-11, would participate in. The stations were: cookie decorating, table games, buddy reading and sports activities. With the help of our amazing parent volunteers, each group spent 20 minutes at each station interacting and sharing laughs with the children. The smiles on everyone’s faces were priceless! The children from the Casa Hogar loved each activity as well as getting to spend time with our students, parents and teachers. At the end of our visit we left a donation of sports equipment, toys, table games, and basic food items. It was a valuable experience all around. It is our hope that our students will return to Casa Hogar Maximo Cornejo to reconnect and spend more time with those warm smiles that touched all our hearts.

SPCA Community Service Project 2013
This year first and second grade visited the SPCA of Puerto Vallarta. The SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of cats and dogs off the streets of Vallarta. In March we took a field trip to their sanctuary. On our visit we partook in many hands-on activities to learn more about the SPCA and what they stand for. We exercised the dogs by taking them for a walk, played with and gave love to the cats, and spent time giving belly rubs and getting to know the many pups that take refuge in the sanctuary. We also enjoyed an informative talk given by one of the volunteers at the SPCA. We learned about what it means to be a responsible pet owner, the importance of taking care of our pets, and how we can help keep animals off the streets. The students really enjoyed their time spent with the animals and learned a lot in the process. As a follow-up to our visit to the SPCA, we decided to make all-natural, healthy dog treats and sell them to our community at ASPV. With the support of our peers, we were able to raise $1,260 pesos! The money we raised was donated back to the SPCA to help them continue to do the great work that they do. It was a fun and rewarding experience all around!
