Braille by Buttons Project 2013
Our class has been reading about amazing historical figures that have experienced visual and hearing disabilities, like Thomas Edison and Helen Keller, we made connections about what we had read to our community through our Braille by Buttons project. Through our project we aimed to raise awareness about Braille and to fund raise money to help a six year old girl with a hearing disability, increase her learning opportunities. This little girl's family has very minimal resources, never mind extra funds for special hearing aids or simple learning materials. This community service endeavor allowed the third graders to set goals, evaluate how to market a product and to set prices for a product, raise funds in a productive and creative way, closely monitor where those funds go, and most valuably see a child´s opportunity for learning expanded from their efforts.
The students thought up a short positive phrase or word that they displayed on a tshirt by sewing buttons to match the corresponding level 1 Braille letters. We set a realistic profit goal and considered the price of brightly colored vocabulary books and hearing aid batteries for our recipient. After holding our t-shirt sale, all sales managed by the students, we met our goal!
The money we raised went to buying a set of books and several hearing aid batteries that would help our new friend begin learning to distinguish that different sounds represent different words. The most valuable part of the experience was the follow up we had with our recipient. It was important for the students to see the direct effects of their positive efforts. We had a great time being so creative and helping out a child in our community begin such a valuable learning journey.
